  1. What benefit does the close range Zealot have over a Harbinger at equal skills? Seems easier to tank and can put out the same damage with drones at a third of the price.

    • That is good a question. The Zealot has a few advantages over the Harbinger. The most important being the optimal range bonus to lasers. Since lasers have the highest optimal of all weapon classes, this bonus gives the Zealot tremendous reach, even with close range weapons. Heavy Pulse Lasers armed Zealots, loaded with Scorch, can strike with full strength at ranges where other close range weapon systems would be fortunate just to hit.

The second major advantage the Zealot has is in capacitor recharge. While the Harbinger has a much larger capacitor, the recharge rate is still faster on the Zealot. Couple that with a similar bonus to Laser cap usage, then you are able to stay in combat for a much longer period of time.

A third advantage is the raw basic damage that a Zealot can do. If you include the optimal range bonus (which you should), the Zealot actually has three damage bonuses compared to the Harbinger’s one. The Zealot not only has the same 5% damage bonus per level as the Harbinger, it also has a more important bonus: The Rate of Fire bonus, which favors Pulse Lasers tremendously and will increase overall DPS more than just the damage bonus will.

The fourth advantage is based on the Zealot’s size. The Zealot has less than half of the signature radius of the Harbinger and is almost a third faster. These features make the Zealot, particularly Afterburner Zealots, a very difficult target to pin down at close range.

      Hope that helps!

  2. Great reply, and quick… thanks! I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why zealots were constantly getting talked up but this explained it well.

    • Yeah.. well, I wrote that one too. :) You might want to try the Amarr Navy Omen first, as the prices are still going down for those ships (Dodixie had them for around 70mil isk last time I looked) and it will at least give you a solid feel of operating in an AHAC gang, plus it has some advantages over the Zealot, like greater speed and a drone bay.. which can be nice to have around on smalller roams.

However, if price is the main concern, you may want to go back to the Harbinger. Battlecruisers are much, much cheaper than Tech II cruisers and the good faction cruisers.
