Since I am a big proponent of the new Ancillary Shield Boosters which have been recently released (Well.. proponent as in people were claiming all sorts of dumb things about ASBs, and I just thought I would point out facts), I thought I would go and see if I could disprove the thought that a Triple ASB Maelstrom could be overpowered. The reason for this belief was simple: Most of the Dual-ASB set ups I have seen turned out to sacrifice significant portions of offense and even resist defenses to fit those ASBs. So, if dual-ASB configs were problematic, certainly triple-ASB configs would be horrible, right? Well looking at the Maelstrom there is one configuration which, after checking the numbers in EFT, that might actually be overpowered.

The above configuration has about 67k shield buffer and can buff around 2500 per second with all boosters going. Damage coming from the Autocannons is pretty decent (and is about 622 DPS, 780 with Hammerhead T2s), but for all intents and purposes this is a more effective than even a well skilled Typhoon PVP setup. A mere change from solo ship to small gang ship would be the replacement of the 9k Scram with either a 24km Warp Disruptor (for better tackling options) or another Invulnerability Field for an addition 8k of buffer and better overall resists.
While I haven’t put one together and flown it in combat, it is pretty clear that this ship would be overwhelming superior on the battlefield unless it gets alpha’d. As much as I would love to see Minmatar ships get the upper hand, this is simply too powerful of a ship at this time.
You can even stagger them and after the initial cycle effectively have two running permanently – providing you use navy charges. ofc as long has you have charges… 🙂
So, if I read this right, this ship would eat about 24M in charges in a reasonably extended fight ?
Without any decent resists?
Sorry, but I still don’t regard it as OP in the slightest. If it takes 3x a module, running 3x faction charges (costing 20% of hull cost per fight), its not overpowered.
Especially if it applies to just one ship.
Try fitting an ASB on a gila, for example, and try to make one work for L4 missions – it doesn’t.
Yeah, the expense is pretty high.. if you use just Navy 400 Cap Charges. This configuration probably could be just as effective using standard 400 cap charges in the short term. If the battle gets extended, that might be a problem, but for most small fights, the standard 400 charges, coupled with three XL ASBs that could be staggered so that you still have coverage during the 60 second reload timer, would be more than sufficient for those fights.
My stats wtih: pyfa 1.1.9 git – Inferno 1.2
Char: All Level 5
EHP: 66.7k total (28.5k shield, 16.3k armor, 21,9k hull)
Resis: 54.7% EM, 51% Thermal, 63.3% Kinetic 69.4% Explosive
Shield Boost: 1818HP/s (all 3)- 2353HP/s overheated
DPS: 622 ( 702 with drones )
Speed: 835m/s
were there any implants or bonuses involved when you calculated with EFT?
or maybe I’m missing something… because this doesn’t seem the same ship as described on your post.
Not that I recall.. however, there is a newer version of EFT out, so I should check in case there was some changes.
Downloaded the new EFT and it looks like our EHP now matches up, but EFT is showing better DPS and Boost number (they are reflected on the post now).
