Sorry about the month wait for my latest post.  Life tends to get funny complicated sometimes, and as such.. requires more attention.  Fortunately though, it has turned out rather well. 🙂

I started writing this piece over a couple months back, after I saw how Evenews24 seemed to just take off almost right at the exact time when Eve-Tribune hadn’t published an article in two months.  Interestingly the day, actually, fifteen minutes before I was going to push the “Publish” button on my post, Eve-Tribune had updated their site.  Well, I said.. that blog post is done.  True, the stories were out of date, but it had returned from the dead at least.  Or.. so I had thought.  Here it has been another couple of months since the once weekly Eve Tribune has put up anything new.  Could this mean the end?

For those rare (and I mean rare) few that have not heard of Eve-Tribune, it was probably the first real news blog/website for those of us who wanted to keep abreast of what was going on in Eve, whether it was Dev Blogs, particular happenings in other regions, or just some humorous stuff to giggle at.  It strived to be as unbiased as possible and often presented two opposing sides of controversal arguments, allowing for some pretty intelligent discussion to happen.  It certainly beats the “up to the minute” style Fox/CNN/MSNBC reporting style that is now available with Evenews24.

I talked with a corpmate of mine a while back when I first noticed the lack of anything coming up from Eve Tribune.  The well known blogger Kirith Kodachi who writes “The Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah” blog (www.ninveah.com) and wrote often for the Eve Tribune.  I really didn’t have much to ask him though, because initially, I was just curious about what was going on.  This is the October 13th interview I did with Kirith:

Question 1: When was the last time you had contact with the head of Eve Tribune, Mr. M?

Answer:  Actually, he’s been active in the Eve trib forums this past week and posted this morning that he would be publishing this edition today on the main page : http://www.eve-tribune.com/index.php?no=5_41

Question 2:  As far as you can tell, what is the current situation with Eve Tribune?

Answer:  It was a combination of the owner/publisher Mr M having real life issues for a month followed by the main editor Finnagain going awol mostly for another few weeks.

Question 3:  Has Eve News 24, in your opinion, had any effect on Eve Tribune?

Answer:  Not that I know of. At least, not that can be told with the editor/publisher difficulties. Hopefully we are past those and we can see what the real effect will be.

Question 4:  What have other writers for the Tribune said regarding how things are right now?

Answer:  No idea. I have not spoken to any of them and the forums have been quiet.

Question 5:  Can we expect Eve Tribune to be revived or are we truly looking at the end of its era?

Answer:  I expect the Tribune to get up and running again, but it depends on Mr M’s desires as he pays the bills.

Sure enough, I went to the link and there it was.. Eve Tribune was back.  Or.. so I thought.  Another month had past and still, the normal weekly edition had not come again.  So, I went back to my famed blogger.. and asked him the same questions again.  Here they are from my November 16th interview:

Question 1: When was the last time you had contact with the head of Eve Tribune, Mr. M?

 Answer:  This past week.

Question 2:  As far as you can tell, what is the current situation with Eve Tribune?

Answer:  The issue appears to be lack of willing writers combined with head staff being drawn away by real life and not getting around to publishing what we do submit.

Question 3:  Has Eve News 24, in your opinion, had any effect on Eve Tribune?

Answer:  Not that I’m aware of.

Question 4:  What have other writers for the Tribune said regarding how things are right now?

Answer:  Most other writers agree we need to mix things up and get new blood, it just seems very hard to get writers to stay around anymore for more than one article (if that).

Question 5:  Can we expect Eve Tribune to be revived or are we truly looking at the end of its era?

Answer:  I don’t know for sure, it remains to be seen. But I know I am looking at other writing gigs for my income now.

It has now been over a month since this last interview.. and even the Eve Tribune forums have not even had a stir since a few days after the last issue was released.  The oddest thing is really how uneventful this appears to be.  There was a time when EVERYBODY read the Eve Tribune when it came out.  You may not have always agreed with it, and sure, some articles may have been a little spotty.. but for the most part it was a rather well put together site that was very informative and allowed people to have serious discussions on the aspects of Eve Online beyond the chaos of Eve-O CAOD forums.

Still, when I started this article.. I felt that the demise of Eve Tribune was something that could be attributed to Eve News 24.  Eve News 24 had burst on the scene only a month prior and was already garnishing thousands of hits.  It came out with daily, even hourly reports on the goings on of Eve, particularly the complex world of 0.0 politics.  But the more I think about it.. the more I look at how Eve Tribune was setup.. it leads me to a different conclusion.

You see, all Eve News 24 is, is just a modern extension of the infamous CAOD forums.  Each article was written by a single person who has only a little amount of time to gather what facts there are before it’s no longer news.  And as mentioned often.. those facts can be difficult to find in the first place, as well as get correct.  Sometimes there is an Eve Tribune-ish commentary between opposing viewpoints.. but no long term discussion on internal Eve issues, or how a patch or newly discovered exploit will change Eve.  Those things were staples of Eve Tribune.

So, what is killing or has killed Eve Tribune?  You’re looking at it.  The player blog.  Eve News 24 is an interesting site, sort of like watching the scores in a football game.  But the player blogs.. those that provided the indepth discussion, the fiction, the community interaction are what left Eve Tribune in the dust.  Why write for Eve Tribune when you can write for yourself?  Whatever you think needs to be discussed you can put it out there, without limitations, without boundaries.  The Blogosphere abound with limitless access and availability for both writers and readers.

This should be a great thing right?  Oh, I think it is.. but if there is one lesson I have learned about growing up in the information age, is that most information is just garbage.  That was one of the quiet advantages of Eve Tribune.  It helped protect us from garbage information.  Maybe not all the time, but it did make a serious effort.  It also brought things to our attention that perhaps we didn’t think important, things that, through any other medium, we would have been allowed to skip right on by.  But such is the world these days.. in and out of game.

October 12th is probably the last article of a once great news website for Eve Online players..

And I will miss it.
