LRHAC – Now an Option?

I have tauted the possibilities of the Muninn for a long time, and to a certain extent I thought it was still a superior ship to the new Attack Battlecruisers like the Tornado for long range attacks.

But, sadly I was in the minority.. and to be fair, the difference really was only academic because while the Muninn could be more effective in certain situations, the price and overall effectiveness of ABCs like the Tornado made the Long Range HAC obsolete.

But how about now after Odyssey 1.1?  Well, first let me show you my old fit:

This configuration I labelled my “Bomber Killer”.  A single shot from this ship usually either destroyed a bomber frigate.. or made him run home as fast as he possibly could.  The volley damage on a ship like this was over 2600, making any frigate caught by the guns little more than swiss cheese.  However, the ship lacked the ability to mount a good defense with only three midslots only 13k EHP at best, and tanking the lows for armor just made it a poor alternate to a shield tanked Vagabond.

So, did the changes CCP make to the new Muninn change anything?

Absolutely.  The added low, the changes to Artillery, as well as increased powergrid have allowed me to upgrade the original “Bomber Killer” to this:

The range has been kept the same, but with the improvements in tracking the Muninn now become a bubble of destruction.  Volley for the 720mms now is around 2800 hitpoints.  And despite losing a missile hardpoint the DPS goes from 335 to about 470, a substantial improvement.  But that isn’t all. The old Muninn just barely had a EHP of 13,000.  The new Muninn, with the same shield configuration, now gets almost double that with 25,000 plus EHP.

Oh, did I add that when I tested it against NPC frigates, that I could hit them with the 720mms while they had a transversal of around 1100?  Yeah, not shabby at all especially since you can again have all your modules active and be fully cap stable.

So.. how about an Armored Variant?

Well, CCP did some serious fine tuning with the Muninn and now it has not just one, but two potentially viable short range armor fits:

The particular configuration boast a nasty 500 DPS using EMP ammo and an EHP of 18k before you consider the 400 plus DPS tank.  The ship is a little slower at 247m/s, and a MWD of 1628m/s.

This variant produces an alarming 562 dps and an effective HP of 32,000.  While more power hungry than its other variants, it still can run all of its module for about five minutes.

Conclusion

I’ll have to hand it to CCP, they balanced the Muninn pretty nicely as far as a configuration point of view.  It’s certainly not the final word since how effective it is will require some time in the field.. but it looks like CCP Rise, CCP Fozzie, and CCP Ytterbium did a darn fine job.
